When I say, “I am a Christian”

Carol Wimmer

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not shouting, “I’ve been saved!”
I’m whispering, “I get lost sometimes
That’s why I chose this way”

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I don’t speak with human pride
I’m confessing that I stumble
Needing God to be my guide

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not trying to be strong
I’m professing that I’m weak
And pray for strength to carry on

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not bragging of success
I’m admitting that I’ve failed
And cannot ever pay the debt

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I don’t think I know it all
I submit to my confusion
Asking humbly to be taught

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not claiming to be perfect
My flaws are all too visible
But God believes I’m worth it

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartache,
Which is why I seek His name

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I do not wish to judge
I have no authority
I only know I’m loved

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. – 1 Corinthians 15:10

footnote… actually I never say that I’m a Christian. I usually say I’m a believer or “a follower of…” or something similar. I find the word/label has been so misused or so broadly generic that I don’t want to identify with it. But I liked this poems message!

  1. I agree with you.
I usually now call myself a disciple, or a follower of Jesus.

I wonder what has happened to make many people suspicious of the word ‘Christian’ ?

  2. This poem truly does tell of what a real christian is. I don’t mind saying I’m a christian as I believe I’m in good company with the former disciples who were first called christian in An’-ti-och (Acts 11:26). Blessings.

  3. Love the poem! I identify myself as a Christian simply because what it means for me, “Christ like”. That is how I try to live my life daily. I am also a believer, disciple, follower, and a child of God. I never cared about labels but these I carry proudly because they all lead to Jesus. I do understand though what you mean when you say the word/label “Christian” has been misused and I agree. Sometimes labels and actions don’t match. I don’t believe God is so much concerned with what we call ourselves but what we call him ( He asked the disciples who do they say I am, who do you say I am?) and if we call on him. The important thing is to know who we are and whose we are. Sorry so long but that is why I love your post, they are thought provoking and stimulating. Thank you and blessings to you.🙏
